There was a real buzz at Offsite Expo around the B&K Structures stand, which was constructed from cross laminated timber (CLT) – the team described the event as ‘outstanding’ with ‘huge opportunities for developing new business partnerships.’

The hybrid engineered timber and steel specialists offered guidance on achieving the best possible sustainable structural solutions. This advice extended to attaining the optimum acoustic properties, thermal insulation and environmental credentials using engineered timber as part of a hybrid system.

Adjacent to their stand, B&K Structures also created one of the feature builds – an innovative Masterclass Theatre developed from engineered timber which hosted the event’s inspiring seminar programme. Speakers from all aspects of the offsite arena presented CPD Accredited Masterclasses. Speakers ranged from architects and designers to manufacturers, engineers, developers and project managers, all offering different approaches and insights into the offsite industry.

Orsman Road – A Flagship Commercial Space

Amongst these speakers, Jules Peyre from B&K Structures presented a case study on their widely acclaimed OR6 project. Recently shortlisted for the 2019 Structural Timber Awards across multiple categories, the hybrid six-storey commercial building effortlessly showcases the benefits of engineered timber technology and light steel frame. B&K Structures once again collaborated closely with timber advocates, Waugh Thistleton Architects to offer an innovative solution for this challenging commercial build. The project called for a structural solution which would maximise space and achieve a rapid construction programme.

In a site-specific structural system, the building’s core, walls, stairs and floors are formed using 6,770m² of high-grade cross-laminated timber manufactured by Binderholz, which allowed B&K Structures to construct a lighter, better quality building within a limited time schedule, with reduced foundations and fewer site deliveries.

The CLT structure contributes to thermal and acoustic insulation, reducing ongoing energy consumption costs and CO2 emissions for the lifetime of the building. The structure delivers an intrinsically sustainable and contemporary approach to construction that offers predictability of price, programme and performance. B&K Structures used a progressive approach to reduce environmental impact and ensure optimal build quality.
