B&K Hybrid Solutions recently joined the University of Sheffield’s Mentor Scheme, welcoming a group of engineering students to Paradise SE11 - where our team are currently on site delivering the CLT and glulam.
.

The UoS mentoring scheme is an extremely important and valuable experience for students to gain insight into real projects, engaging in discussions with those who are actively involved and have invaluable experience to share.

Students from the University were accompanied by BKHS Structural Engineer Cagatay Demirci and Project Manager Joe McGlynn - alongside our on-site team - who demonstrated our exciting progress on site so far.

With five storeys of the structural frame now complete, the team walked the site and gave this next generation of engineers a unique opportunity to observe site activities, while much of the structural frame remains exposed.

One student commented: “we kept learning continuously from the BKHS engineers and managers as we walked, and it was great to see engineering in practice to support our understanding of the theoretical concepts - experience is crucial, just as much as a certificate, sometimes more! I received a lot of insight about how timber design is done. The experience was incredibly beneficial: I learned a lot and believe all the rest did too. Thank you once again.”

Paradise is an impressive six-storey timber development in the heart of London, comprising a glulam timber frame and cross laminated timber floor panels, and is stabilised with reinforced concrete cores. The frame is currently being installed and is nearing structural completion, with BKHS providing a complete design and build solution to the timber elements. A fantastic example of a Carbon Neutral office development, Paradise is due to be completed Q1 next year and is already an award-winning project that is exemplary of carbon neutrality and sustainable UK construction.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and we look forward to continuing to give back through mentoring and education, with the hopes of inspiring the next generation of construction professionals.

At B&K Hybrid Solutions, we design and deliver low carbon mass timber and steel structures across the UK. If you’d like to find out more about BKHS, our work or joining the team get in touch: [email protected]
