BKHS are dedicated to helping the next generation of construction professionals launch their career and develop their skills, through summer placements and graduate schemes in Derby and Manchester.
Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of hosting George on a 9-week Summer Placement within our Design team. Here, he tells us about his experience working at BKHS:
“During my summer placement, I gained valuable experience in several key areas. I developed technical skills by working on real-world projects, analysing loads, and using industry-standard software like Masterseries and Rhino. I deepened my understanding of design principles and materials and learned about regulatory standards and sustainable practices.
A highlight of the placement was visiting some of the sites we were working on, which provided practical insights into how design translates into construction. This experience also enhanced my professional skills, including team collaboration, communication, and project management, while building my professional network and honing my problem-solving abilities. This placement has further solidified my passion for structural engineering and has equipped me with a deeper understanding of the field.
I’m excited to take these experiences and lessons into my final year at university and my future endeavours. A huge thank you to B&K Hybrid Solutions for this amazing opportunity and to everyone in the structural department who supported me!”

At B&K Hybrid Solutions, as the UK’s leading sustainable frame contractor, we are uniquely placed to provide students with exposure to Structural Engineering of steel and mass timber structures, from detailed design through to in-house fabrication at our manufacturing facility and installation on site. During a placement with us, students are given the opportunity to develop their technical skills and benefit from working alongside our engineers to deliver design for live projects.
Day to day activities throughout the placement included computational analysis, structural calculation, production of drawings and reports, attendance in workshops and design meetings, and opportunities to visit our fabrication facility and live construction sites. Each Summer Placement Student is carefully mentored by one of our skilled engineers and receive on-the-job-training and regular constructive feedback through the placement, to help them develop their skills and launch their careers.
We are looking for Civil or Structural Engineering Masters MEng Undergraduate students, in their second or third year of study, to join our in-house team for a summer placement in 2025. We are highly interested in candidates who have a passion for the built environment and can demonstrate both talent and commitment to the field. Applicants should possess sound technical skills, be passionate about their work, and demonstrate creative thinking.
