Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at B&K Hybrid Solutions, and we understand the paramount importance of decarbonising construction - which accounts for nearly 40% of global emissions.

As one of the UK’s leading sustainable frame subcontractor, we are committed to integrating sustainability across all areas of our organisation. For many years we have embraced hybrid timber and steel solutions as the key to reducing carbon emissions throughout our supply chain and in our projects, and in 2021 we acquired our state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facility to support our long-term goals and guarantee the transparency of our products through in-house supply.

However, we recognise our procurement choices have a significant impact on the environment, society, and the long-term sustainability of our operations and have therefore made a conscious effort to ensure this commitment is also reflected throughout our steel manufacturing.

As such we are delighted to announce our Sustainable Procurement Strategy.

This initiative plays a fundamental role within our daily activities - the purpose of our Sustainable Procurement policy is to establish clear principles and guidelines that govern our steel procurement activities, and it outlines our dedication to responsible sourcing, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.

By adopting this initiative, BKHS aim to not only meet client and project requirements but also set higher standards for ourselves in contributing positively to the wellbeing of the planet and the communities in which we operate. Additionally, sustainable steel sourcing promotes responsible resource management, ensuring the long-term availability of raw materials.

Our strategy includes an in-depth review of categorised steelwork, as part of BKHS’ sourcing criteria, which goes above and beyond most client or project requirements, and a grading process for our supply chain including all mills where our steelwork has been procured. We are committed to reporting source mills, locations and milage – including holding EPDs for all supplying mills. We are advocates for transparency and aim to work closely with main contractors to report, advise and deliver quantifiable knowledge-sharing, in the hope that our ambitious sustainability targets will be matched across the supply chain to ensure the future of sustainable construction.

In addition to our Sustainable Procurement initiative, B&K Hybrid Solutions have also achieved the Planet Mark Business Certification, furthering our commitment to reduce our impact on society. In order to achieve this sustainability certification, we’ve followed a robust three-step process: Measuring our impact, engaging everyone in the business and communicating our progress.

We have measured our own carbon footprint and will continue to take responsibility of our carbon emissions to have a positive impact on planet and society. We are also contributing to the UN SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) as we in the importance of creating a sustainable future for the planet and our industry. We are also members of SteelZero, whereby we have made a public commitment to procuring, specifying or stocking 100% net zero steel by 2050, and 50% lower carbon steel by 2030.

At B&K Hybrid Solutions, we are committed to decarbonising construction, taking responsibility, and working towards a greener built environment.
