To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we spoke to some of our current apprentices and learnt more about their stories. From what their current roles are to their future ambitions, they tell us all about their apprenticeships so far.
Today we meet Isa who began his journey with BKHS as an Apprentice Fabricator Welder in 2023.
"Being an Apprentice Fabricator Welder, I work on the shop floor with a range of equipment. The department oversees the cutting, fabrication, welding and painting of all types of beams for projects. Everyone has their own bay in the fabrication shop, where they are provided with the fitting plates, steel sections and drawings which need fabricating, and then pre-weld inspections ensure items are correct before progressing to being welded.
My role as an apprentice means that I take part in many different roles on the shop floor. From utilising saws to cut materials, prepping plates, and fabricating and welding steel, I have gained a lot of experience which allows me to expand my knowledge about the company and the departments within - not only on the shop floor but the office too.
In the future, I am aiming to finish my apprenticeship and gain my qualifications before hopefully moving up the ranks. I take inspiration from the Directors and Senior Management at the company, as they all began their journey by starting on the shop floor. Seeing this, I am motivated to keep learning and applying my knowledge in what could be the starting point of a long and successful career.
The best things about apprenticeships are gaining experience and skills whilst earning money. You are able to learn through a mixture of participating practically and university or college lectures. At the end of my course, I will not have any student debt which is another bonus of apprenticeships.
Everyone at BKHS has been incredibly welcoming - you can be yourself and build strong relationships, so I would absolutely recommend working here. The management team are great and they provide you with a lot of feedback, with regular update meetings so you know what you are doing well at and what you need to do to improve."
