To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we spoke to some of our current apprentices and learnt more about their stories. From their current roles to their future ambitions, in their own words they told us all about their apprenticeships so far.

To round off the week we meet Kian, who began his journey with BKHS as an Apprentice CAD Technician in 2024.

At BKHS, I work in the drawing department as an Apprentice CAD Technician. In this department, we take engineer’s and architect’s designs and turn them into 3D models. Alongside producing these models, we create detailed technical drawings which are then transferred into the workshop to be fabricated, welded and transported to site.

My role as a Level 3 Apprentice is to assist with projects and learn about the preparation of models. Throughout my apprenticeship, I have gained a lot of valuable experience and knowledge about steelwork drawings, which are needed to update and finish projects to the highest standard and client satisfaction.

Broadening and developing my understanding of the construction industry is something I am aiming to achieve as I continue my apprenticeship with the company. When I graduate, my future ambitions are to continue my career at BKHS by becoming a draughtsman and progressing to higher management.

Becoming an apprentice is great as it provides you with a hands-on opportunity to learn about the industry you are a part of. During this, you are also working towards a qualification that will help you in your future profession. Getting paid to gain this experience is also a bonus for apprenticeships, so I would recommend them to anyone who is thinking about completing one.

Everyone at BKHS is really friendly and makes you feel part of the team from the moment you step through the door. They are all willing to help whenever you need it no matter what questions or problems you have. One of my favourite things that BKHS offer their apprentices is the number of opportunities available to help you progress. From attending project launches and visiting construction sites, you have many opportunities to see the work you complete in real time.
