To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we spoke to some of our current apprentices and learnt more about their stories. From what their current roles are to their future ambitions, they tell us all about their apprenticeships so far.

Today we meet Oliver who began their journey with BKHS as a Construction Trainee in 2025.

"As a construction trainee, I am currently working within the contracts team, a department which is vital in the entire process of completing a project. When a project has been launched, we draft, negotiate and manage all the contracts which includes agreements with clients, suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring everyone is sticking to a contract’s terms and projects are running smoothly.

Being an apprentice, I work alongside a Project Manager in a team of two, and my role is to support the Project Manager throughout a project, completing many different tasks along the way, while also gaining experience on how projects are run and learning the ropes. In my role I spend a lot of time working across different departments, from getting the drawings to issuing fabrication packages and getting the materials to site along with administrative work.

I have many ambitions that I want to achieve, the first being completing my university degree which will then hopefully help me progress to become a Project Coordinator at BKHS.

Apprenticeships are great for young people as they offer everything you need to succeed. You can learn a skill or a trade while actively working in a job and earn money at the same time, which gives you the best of both worlds.

I really recommend working at BKHS as they are specialists in the design and delivery of structural steel and timber-steel hybrid projects and they take great pride in the work they do, making sure everything is done to the right standard. Everyone who works here is very welcoming and kind with a good ratio of experienced workers to ones who are just beginning their careers. There are also many chances to visit site, and seeing the work you do behind the computer in person is really beneficial!"
