With the current trend of buildings considering refurbishment before demolition, timber can provide a sensitive, low weight solution without significant strengthening or intrusive works.

These examples of some recently completed buildings showcase the benefits timber can bring to refurbishment projects, preserving history while adding the sustainability and biophilic benefits of timber.

• The Gramophone Works – A landmark commercial scheme where the lightweight benefits of structural timber facilitated the refurbishment works, with minimal strengthening, adding an additional four storeys. BKS delivered the CLT, glulam and structural steelwork elements.

• Technique – A truly unique redevelopment of two adjoining mid-20th century properties, harmonising and extending the useable space in a way that offers exceptional flexibility in its new commercial role to create three attractive new floors. BKS delivered the integrated steelwork and structural timber package.

• Metropolis – An impressive redevelopment and extension of an iconic London landmark that utilises the benefits of a hybrid cross laminated timber and structural steelwork system, exemplifying our expertise in hybrid construction. BKS completed the extension works, including balconies and exposed timber elements.

• Walworth Town Hall – Utilising a hybrid steel, CLT and glulam system to integrate with the original elements, this sensitive modernisation of an iconic Grade II listed building carefully restored the original features of the Town Hall. Our team completed the structural refurbishment and rooftop extension.

• 16 Chart Street – A low-carbon refurbishment of a traditional 1930s masonry warehouse providing a modern vertical extension, with the addition of a one storey CLT roof extension and external structural steelwork staircase. BKS delivered the CLT and steelwork.
