The team at B&K Structures are celebrating success at the 2020 Structural Timber Awards with Skelton Lake, a new concept for motorway services, reaching the finals across three categories – Commercial Project of the Year, Retail Project of the Year and Installer of the Year.
Part of a team which included Morgan Sindall, Architecture 519, Curtins Consulting, Binderholz and Rubner – we were appointed to design, fabricate and install the structural system for Skelton Lake. The scheme features exposed long span glulam beams and cross laminated timber (CLT) panels together with an ambitious roof formed from timber cassettes and curved glulam beams – supported by Y shaped steel columns. The structure is topped off with an undulating sedum roof.
But this is not our only success, our joint award submission with construction partners Stora Enso, Calfordseaden Architects and Niblock has also reached the finals of Commercial Project of the Year for Poplar Works - a unique multi-million pound fashion and ‘makery’ hub. Combining manufacturing, training and affordable studio space, together with a community accessible café, events space and garden area. The hybrid CLT has transformed eighty disused garages into the cornerstone for the resurgent historic creative and industrial identity of Poplar.
With our construction partners, we have been instrumental in the development and growth of the engineered timber sector in the UK. We are delighted to reach the finals in so many categories. These awards are not only an excellent barometer of achievements and innovations in the timber industry but most importantly, they are a great way to reward and motivate construction teams.
Through careful design detailing and value engineering, B&K Structures is able to offer the best possible offsite manufactured construction solutions, ensuring a smooth integration for follow-on trades – delivering award-winning, environmentally and sustainable projects on time and to budget.
