Universities are facing challenging times and we firmly believe that greater collaboration is needed with education providers to explore ways to engage directly with students.

Some time ago B&K Structures formed a partnership with Nottingham Trent University (NTU). From the original guest lectures, we have progressed this relationship and although we can no longer go into the University, digital technology has allowed us to continue this support.

Our Pre-Construction Manager, Jules Peyré, recently delivered a guest webinar for the final year architectural technology students on the durability of timber in construction. In his presentation Jules covered a brief introduction to the concept of durability in wood science, then discussed best practice principles to ensure durability throughout all stages of the project and during the lifetime of the built assets. The science behind durability was then demonstrated through the use of practical case studies focusing on some of B&K Structures award winning projects including:

The Advanced Product Creation Centre for Jaguar Land Rover; The Pavilion, Hardman Square, Manchester; the pioneering sustainable commercial project – Sky Believe in Better Building, and the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory of Sustainable Chemistry for the University of Nottingham.

This webinar will help inform the students' final-year projects and ultimately assist Nottingham Trent University in continuing to provide significant learning opportunities.

Jason Bierton Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technology at Nottingham Trent University expressed his appreciation saying: “The final-year architectural technology students appreciate an industry leader sharing their experience and expertise regarding mass timber construction, supported by case studies that show how theory is put into practice. Thanks again to everyone at B&K Structures that have facilitated both yours and Jules’ input at NTU.”

The students also conveyed their gratitude saying: “We found it very interesting and informative - thanks for setting this up, we really appreciate having a chance to talk through this via an interactive webinar format.”
