B&K Hybrid Solutions are delivering the new storage facility and logistics hub at British Library, Boston Spa, on behalf of Wates Group.
The team are detailing, fabricating and erecting 840 tonnes of steelwork for the archive storage hub and will design and deliver the timber elements for the adjoining CLT and glulam logistics hub.
The new British Library Boston Spa storage facilities will house the UK’s national collection, expanding the space by 220km for the Library's collection, and will include a new logistics hub, education space and viewing gallery to observe the towering robotic stacks.
The main ASB building is a super-airtight steel-frame shed, 93m tall internally, containing the collection within a low-oxygen environment to meet international archival standards.
Alongside, the 1600m² logistics building – formed from CLT walls and roof supported by glulam beams and columns – has a sawtooth roof above a flexible workspace.
"The project will set a new standard for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, demonstrating how both building new and revitalising the old will provide a sustainable future for the British Library.”
