B&K Structures are pleased to share these site progress photos from Walworth Town Hall, where our team have completed the structural refurbishment and rooftop extension. Utilising a hybrid steel, CLT and glulam system to integrate with the original elements, this sensitive modernisation of an iconic Grade II listed building is beginning to realise its ambitious design.

On behalf of Conamar, and the client General Projects, we have worked closely with Heyne Tillett Steel and Feix&Merlin Architects [FYKES & MERR-LIN] to carefully restore the original features of the Town Hall. New vertical extensions and roofs utilising CLT by Stora Enso have been installed, and the provision of a new lift core further modernises the building and provides improved accessibility.

James Brentnall, BKS Contracts Manager:

“Walworth Town Hall has been a fantastic project to oversee, one which really showcases our expertise in this area of hybrid construction. Innovative connection design work was needed to integrate and honour the original features with the new lightweight CLT and Glulam roof, and the new structural steel mezzanine floor in particular will allow the council chamber to become a hub of activity.

Close collaboration with Conamar has been key to the progression of the scheme and I am pleased to see the impressive refurbishment of this grade 2 listed building from start to nearing completion. I’m looking forward to seeing the final result later in the year"

The final result will be a community hub which is once again open to the public; a free-to-use, purpose-built community space that can host events, seminars and leisure activities curated by the local community, for the local community. Overall, the project will deliver some 50,000 sq/ft back into usable spaces, which have been derelict since a fire in 2013. The aim is to return Walworth Town Hall to its former glory as one of London’s truly iconic civic buildings since 1894.
