About The Building

The Pavilion building known as ‘The Field’ is intended to be the final building located within the Spinningfields development. The four-storey structure is a mixed-use scheme comprising restaurant, bar and kitchen spaces. The Field will be a space with a personality. Inspired by a true story, Eleanor Byrom, a young Manchester girl whose health was transformed in the 1700’s by a field opposite her home, today it is known as ‘Hardman Square’.

The Brief

B&K Structures is responsible for constructing Manchester’s largest timber framed building. Working with the main contractor BAM, B&K Structures undertook the coordination of the design, supply and installation of the structural frame.

Solution & Results

This impressive structure comprises a primary glulam frame with rib deck panels (CLT slabs with glulam ribs) forming the floor and roof construction. Structural steel vertical bracing on the longitudinal elevations provides stability in the traverse direction and a series of CLT walls provide lengthwise stability. Steel bracing also supports the cantilevering gable ends. The CLT rib deck floor provides a diaphragm which transfers lateral loads from the façade to the steel bracing and CLT cores. The Pavilion’s impressive timber structure will be greened and softened with landscaped ledges and trellises, tiered seating and street furniture, adding some ever-needed public green space to the urban layout of Manchester city centre. Enveloped by a green veil, which will link and intertwine The Pavilion and The Field together, this vibrant new area will be a unified and completely unique space.
